Skincare for Dry & Dehydrated Skin
Common signs include tightness, flaking, dullness, sensitivity, and fine lines that appear more pronounced.
-
Dry and dehydrated skin are two of the most common skin concerns and they are often confused with one another. Dry skin lacks lipids, while dehydrated skin lacks water. Both can leave the skin feeling tight, dull, and uncomfortable, and many people experience them at the same time.
-
When the barrier is compromised, the skin also becomes more reactive to environmental stressors and slower to recover. Every product in this collection has been selected to support the skin barrier, restore hydration, and help the skin function the way it was designed to.

Common triggers
Dry and dehydrated skin can be influenced by a range of internal and external factors, including:
- Weather changes and low humidity environments.
- Over-cleansing or using products that strip the skin barrier.
- Harsh or active-heavy routines that disrupt the skin's natural pH.
- Low water intake or a diet lacking in essential fatty acids.
- Stress and poor sleep, which can affect the skin's ability to repair overnight.
- Air conditioning, heating, and prolonged screen exposure.
- Hormonal shifts throughout different life stages.
Understanding what is contributing to your skin's dryness or dehydration helps guide a more targeted and effective routine.
Your dry skin care routine
A supportive dry skin care routine focuses on gentle cleansing, layering hydration, and sealing the barrier. The key is choosing products that work with the skin rather than against it.
-
AM Routine
Start the morning by cleansing with a soft, pH-balanced formula or our Grace Face Oil Cleanser that removes overnight buildup without stripping. Follow with our hydrating face mist to prep the skin for a hydrating serum to draw water into the skin and plump from within. Finish with a moisturiser that seals in hydration and supports the barrier throughout the day. Always finish with SPF.
-
PM Routine
In the evening, begin with a double cleanse if you wear makeup or SPF. A gentle face oil used as a first cleanse dissolves surface buildup without disrupting the barrier. Follow with a soft cleanser, then apply your mist, followed y your serums while skin is still slightly damp. Finish with a richer moisturiser or calming cream to support overnight repair. A few drops of face oil pressed over the top can help lock everything in.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin is a skin type characterised by lower sebum production and fewer natural lipids available to maintain the barrier. Dehydrated skin is a condition that refers to a lack of water in the skin and can affect any skin type, including oily or combination skin. Both can cause tightness, dullness, and sensitivity, but they benefit from slightly different product approaches.
What should I look for in dehydrated skin products?
For dehydrated skin, look for products that do two things: add water to the skin and help stop that water escaping. Helpful ingredients include humectants such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea and polyglutamic acid, which attract water into the skin. Then pair those with barrier supporting ingredients like ceramides, squalane, fatty acids, cholesterol and soothing ingredients such as panthenol or beta glucan, which help reduce water loss.
In terms of texture, a serum, mist or moisturiser can all work, depending on what is inside them. A mist or serum can be great for adding lightweight hydration, while a moisturiser is important for sealing that hydration in. The best dehydrated skin routine usually layers a water based hydrating product underneath a moisturiser rather than relying on one product alone.
Can I use a face oil if my skin is dehydrated?
Yes. A non-comedogenic face oil like The Grace Face Oil can help support barrier repair and lock in moisture without clogging pores. It is particularly effective when used as part of a PM routine after your serum and moisturiser, or as a gentle first cleanse to remove makeup without stripping.
What is the best cleanser for dry skin?
A gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that does not strip or disrupt the barrier is ideal. The Lily Cleanser is formulated as a soft cleanser for dry skin, using plant-based surfactants that remove daily buildup without causing tightness, dryness, or irritation.
How long before I see results?
The skin renews approximately every four to six weeks. Consistent use of a targeted dry skin care routine throughout that cycle gives the barrier the best chance to restore and strengthen. Most people notice improved comfort and hydration within the first few weeks of use.
Are these products suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes. All products by The Functional Skin in this collection have been formulated with sensitive and compromised skin in mind. They are low-tox, free from harsh stripping ingredients, and designed to work with the skin's natural biology.
Do I need both a serum and a moisturiser?
For dry and dehydrated skin, yes. A face serum for dry skin delivers active hydration deep into the skin, while a moisturiser or calming cream seals the barrier and prevents moisture loss. Together they provide more comprehensive and longer-lasting support than either product alone.
When to see a skin clinician
If your skin is persistently dry, reactive, or not responding to a consistent routine, it may be worth exploring what is happening beneath the surface. Chronic dryness and sensitivity can sometimes be connected to internal factors including gut health, nervous system regulation, and hormonal imbalances.
Madilyn and the team at The Functional Skin Studio in Brisbane take a functional, root-cause approach to skin health, supporting clients with complex and ongoing skin concerns.
