Why I decided to create health conscious skincare

When I first started creating The Functional Skin, I knew I wanted every product to feel good on the skin, but also feel good in my conscience.
After 14 years working in the skin industry and seeing thousands of skins in clinic, I became more aware of just how much we expose ourselves to every single day.
Skincare is not just something we use once in a while.
For most women, it is products applied morning and night, every day, for years.
That does not mean every ingredient outside of the “natural” world is dangerous, and I never want to promote fear around skincare.
Science has given us some incredible ingredients that can genuinely improve skin health. But I do believe we have become a little too comfortable normalising harsh, overly fragranced, stripping or unnecessary ingredients in products we use long term.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It is intelligent, protective and deeply connected to overall health.
When the skin barrier becomes chronically inflamed or disrupted, we often see flow on effects like sensitivity, dehydration, eczema, breakouts, redness and irritation.
This is something I saw constantly in clinic. People trying harder and harder products, only for their skin to become more reactive over time.
One of the biggest misconceptions in the skincare industry is that “stronger” means better.
In reality, healthy skin functions best when it is supported, not constantly attacked.
This is why I became so passionate about health conscious skincare formulations that focus on calming inflammation, protecting the skin barrier and working with the skin instead of against it.
There is also growing research around long term exposure to certain chemicals commonly found in personal care products.
Again, this is not about panic or scare tactics. It is simply about awareness. Ingredients like synthetic fragrance blends, harsh surfactants and some preservatives can contribute to irritation or sensitisation in certain individuals, especially when used daily over many years.
Sensitive skin, eczema prone skin and compromised skin barriers are often the first to show these effects.
For me personally, having extremely sensitive and eczema prone skin changed the way I viewed formulations completely.
I wanted skincare that still felt beautiful and effective, but without the heavy fragrance, unnecessary fillers or aggressive ingredients that left my skin flaring.
That became the foundation of The Functional Skin.
Health conscious skincare does not need to mean boring skincare.
It also does not mean every ingredient must come from a plant.
I believe the best formulations combine evidence based skin science with gentle, skin supportive ingredients that respect the skin’s natural function.
When choosing skincare, I always encourage people to think beyond marketing buzzwords and trends.
Ask yourself:
• Is this supporting my skin long term?
• Does my skin feel calm and healthy using it?
• Would I feel comfortable using this every day for years?
Because glowing skin is not just about chasing quick results. It is about creating healthy, resilient skin that functions properly for the long run.
